"I Can Be. . . Barbie” – Architect Workshops
The American Institute of Architects is excited to partner with Mattel to pre-launch the “I Can Be…Architect Barbie” during AIA’s national convention, May 12−14, in New Orleans, Louisiana! We are delighted to invite local organizations to sign up groups of 25-30 girls, ages 7 – 9 years old, to have the opportunity to interact with an architect during our AIA/Barbie Workshops!
Girls will have the unique opportunity to learn from a real architect about what it takes to become an architect in a fun and educational environment on location at the AIA 2011 National Convention (May 12-14). Girls will learn about the first female architect recognized by the AIA over 125 years ago and will get to ‘create’ their very own Dream House. All participants in the workshop will leave with a gift bag including their own Architect Barbie and a special Barbie notebook inspiring girls to write their own dreams and realize that no dream is too big.
Looking for a fun way to spend your time in between education sessions at the AIA convention? Join us at the Mattel Booth on the Expo floor! Architects, interns, and architecture students are needed to help conduct these hands-on sessions and engage with the girls. Even though these workshops are focused on girls, men are encouraged to volunteer, as well! This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce girls to the profession of architecture and the value of the built environment, and to show them that they, too, can be an architect.
Feel free to forward this information on to anyone else who may be interested in participating as a volunteer.

Shadow an Architect Program
You can make a difference in the life of a young student! Be a mentor for the day to high school students from New Orleans. Guide them to the Diversity Lounge, the AIAS Lounge, and onto the Expo Floor, and answer their questions about architecture and the architecture profession. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the next generation of up and coming architects! Architects, interns, and architecture students are all encouraged to participate!
This event takes place on Friday, May 13, from 9:00 am - 3:30 PM, at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Register here, or email@example.com.
